The Valkyries

The Valkyries were the maidens (ghostly females of the mist) who chose which warrior would be (honorable) slain in a battlefield and taken to Walhalla.  They served the wind god:  Brynhild, Geironul, Geirskogul, Goll, Gondul, Gunn, Guth, Herfjotur, Hervor [Warder of the Host], Hild [Battle], Hlathguth [Necklace-Adorned Warrior-Maiden ], Hlokk, Hrist, Mist, Olrun [One Knowing Ale Rune], Randgrith, Rathgrith, Reginleif, Sigrdrifa, Sigrun, Skeggjold, Skogul, Skuld [Necessity], Svava, and Thruth. They were known as the "slaughter goddesses" with the most barbaric intentions.  The appearance of a Valkyrie means that death is coming.

Interesting to know that during WWII, there was a Operation Valkyrie that was put together to remove Hitler from power.

Richard Wagner included the Valkyries (Die Walküren) in his work of "The Ring of the Nibelung"  in which next to Brünnhilde the child of Wotan some eight Valkyries appear.
